Earth
Why is Earth is called Earth? This is a question that I have constantly asked myself to no avail. I went to do research on this topic and here were some assumptions of some people. All of the planets, except for Earth, were named after Greek and Roman gods and godesses. The name Earth is an English/German name which simply means the ground. It comes from the Old English words 'eor(th)e' and 'ertha'. In German it is 'erde'. Another assumption is that the name of this planet is only "Earth" in English. In many languages including English the name means soil/dirt/ground. For most of human history people did not realize that the Earth was a planet, they thought it was a flat plate surrounded by oceans, a turtle, mud heaped up from beneath the water by a local deity, or a turtle. The name was never purpopsely developed. Hence the name Earth.
